My Story: Ashley Kitchens – The Nobility of Hard Work

“I still remember the conversation like it was yesterday.  It’s not every day that someone thanks you for the opportunity you’ve given them and tells you that it saved their life.”

My name is Ashley Kitchens and this is my “Nobility of Hard Work” story.  In early 2020, I was working with another company and doing well.  Although I was making a lot of money, I was not happy with my work environment and overall how I was being treated.  When the Coronavirus pandemic hit, I was forced to start looking for another job and luckily I was discovered by American Lumper Services and started working as a recruiter.

I could tell early on in my experience with them that I was truly appreciated.  There was a drastic improvement with my overall morale and I was excited about my job.  I believe that when you work with a good company with good people and teamwork, good things happen.

I want to share an inspiring story that exemplifies our belief in the “Nobility of Hard Work”.  It also reminds me of the importance of my job in providing opportunities for those that are willing to put in the hard work as a member of  the American Lumper team.

In Sept of 2020, I interviewed James.   He was in his mid-late 50s and honestly overqualified for the position he was applying for.  We don’t typically have applicants for warehouse associates who are in this age range, especially when they have previous managerial experience.  The warehouse associate job is labor intensive. James insisted and pleaded for the opportunity and he told me “I just need to work!”  He was also worried that because he was  missing a lot of the paperwork (birth certificate, social security card) we would need to process his application.  I assured him that we would have a job for him and worked with him to assist in getting everything together.  For three months, he showed up every day, on-time and worked hard packing heavy rugs into large crates.  Our client was impressed with his work effort and extended him a job offer that made sense for him to take.  I ran into him one day in the facility and he was dressed in business attire.   He was now a manager with our client – just 4 months after my interview with him.  I still remember the conversation like it was yesterday.  It’s not every day that someone thanks you for an opportunity you’ve given them and tells you; “Thank you so much; this job saved my life!”  I then found out that the reason why he had trouble getting his birth certificate and social security card was because he was going through a really hard time and on the verge of being evicted.

I know every employee who works hard with the American Lumper team has their own unique inspiring story and realizing this reminds me of the importance of my job as a recruiter.  The people who join our team just need an opportunity and their hard work will be rewarded.

I am very thankful for my managers at American Lumper Services.  They have faith in me and trust me to do my job.  I am able to do what needs to be done without them breathing down my neck.  The warehouse supervisors with American Lumper understand the value of teamwork and I see this in every warehouse I’ve visited.

To every supervisor with American Lumper, I encourage you to reflect back on some of the stories of some of the people you have either employed or worked with and think of how you this job has helped better their lives.

If you are someone willing to work hard and join a great team who treats their employees well, I hope you consider working with American Lumper Services.  We would love to have you.
